Additional Languages

We aim to prepare our students for a globalized world. Therefore, in addition to having English as the vehicular language in our curriculum, all our students take classes in German, Spanish, and Valencian. Furthermore, starting from the fifth year, we incorporate French as a foreign language.

Spanish / Valencian

Shackleton International School follows the British Education System but also adheres to the regulations set by the Spanish Government. According to these regulations, all schools must teach Spanish, even if it is not the main language of instruction. Additionally, students must learn the co-official language in regions where other languages are spoken.

We strive to achieve language immersion through practical and contextualized projects so that the language is learned by using it, not just through grammar theory, spelling, reading comprehension, vocabulary, oral, and written expression.

Early childhood education in Spanish aims to promote oral language development and lay the foundations for reading and writing skills in later stages. The school adopts a playful and participatory approach to encourage children to actively enjoy learning the language.

After the fundamental stage, the focus shifts towards achieving fluency in the language. The school provides students with everything necessary to become fluent in Spanish, including reading, speaking, grammar, writing, and vocabulary.

In Year 3, native Spanish speakers are introduced to Valencian, a co-official language in the region. During the first year, students develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in this new language while also learning to identify numbers and letters. The school not only teaches the language but also focuses on the culture, including festivities, to immerse students in their new language as much as possible.

German

Throughout our students’ school life, they are taught German every day. These sessions focus on developing students’ listening and speaking skills. Classes are conducted using worksheets for younger students or workbooks for older students.

We concentrate on their language skills and aim to develop their fine motor skills in all classes, which is beneficial when learning to write in any language. Throughout the year, students are introduced to many aspects of German culture and come to understand that learning a foreign language is fun and enjoyable.

French

In Year 5, French is introduced. The purpose of these sessions is to expose students to the French language and culture, enabling them to engage in very basic conversations using the vocabulary they have learned.
